Artist, Educator, and Friend, Cedric Tai will be facilitating 3 free workshops of co-learning.
Workshop #2 was "What Could Neuroqueer Filmmaking be?" which took place during "Polarity" @ Robinson Space on Nov. 5th, 2022, with the LevelGround Collective.
Workshop #3 "Dreaming a Neuroqueer Film" will take place within the art installation
The Garden by artist Megan Whitmarsh, where she is providing access to handmade costumes and props! Cedric will be leading the process and a Zoom intro session preceding the day of filming from 11 am - 2 pm where we can go over filming in the small art gallery the next day.
They will also introduce everyone to the meta-ness of the film concept as a way to educate ourselves about how films are made, starting with giving ourselves permission to make a film (or parts to a film). Cedric will also go over
'Internal Family Systems,' "Parts work", in order to come up with characters and a single line of dialogue, and then go over the logistics of how everyone will get the footage in order to cut their own version of a film. The number of active participants will be limited (camera operators, directors, actors), but the number of participants (who could be background actors) will not be limited.
This is taking place in the Hansell Gallery at the Philosophical Research Society on Sat. March 30th during their open hours, 1 - 7 pm and lunch will be provided.
Zoom info will be e-mailed to participants. The Philosophical Research Society is located at 3910 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027
If you'd like to see how Workshop #1 went it has been archived here on
Miro which is also where I gave my presentation and collaboratively made notes. (It doesn't require any extra software, and may ask you to create account, and it may make your internet connection run slowwer, just FYI)
Workshop #1 was a bit of a creative meet and greet, a choose-your-own-adventure info dump, a meandering Q and A to no one in particular, a sharing of space/time/resources.
A 15-min video presentation was generated as well including highlights from the first workshop. The second workshop titled 'What Could Neuroqueer Film Be?' took place during the the opening of 'Polarity' which resulted in about 8 participants writing a future-imaginary, pre-figurative, first chapter to a book(s) on Neuroqueer Film.
Quick note on Community Standards, before joining online, all participants will have agreed to:
- Respect pronouns and chosen names
- Talking quickly or over each other is fine, but keep in mind that there will only be AI live transcription.
- Any neurotypical white men, will be asked to notice if you are talking too much and need to take a step back...
- All participants are welcome and encouraged to ask the facilitator questions, ask for clarification, and ask for needs such as breaks.
- Speak from an "I" position, try not to bring up others' lived experiences outside your own, especially avoid careless essentializing.
- This space is accepting and encouraging of unmasking, fidget toys, and using accomodations including tone indicators (/s = sarcastic, /g = genuine, /srs = serious, /j = joking)
If all of the above sounds good to you too, please fill out
this survey and send an e-mail to RSVP by at least March 23rd, 2024 by
sending an e-mail.
Many more information and resources are being made available for Patreon supporters and you can join by clicking
this link here. This is also where I am accepting donations for the project. The suggested donation for Workshop #3 is between $10 - $20.
I'm not sure if it's going to be the best time to try to introduce this
Meaningful Accounting Calculator that I co-created with Kristy Mitchell for a Rev. School workshop, but it was a super interesting way to get at what we really want out of a project. If we're going to queer film we might as well get as foundational as the unspoken aspects of filmmaking, the need for more equitable pay and transparency of the budgeting process!
